CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Spark

I watch from the driver's seat as everyone helps run Brendan into the clubhouse. The doctor’s waiting out front for us to get there with Smith. As he walks in, he talks animatedly on his phone. He's probably trying to clear things up. A big ass explosion like that is bound to turn some heads.

This was his operation in the first place so, of course, he'd make sure there’s no blowback. Hestia couldn't remove her fingers so she had to run in with them. I'm stuck in the seat, because I can't get to my wheelchair and even just moving my foot back and forth on the gas pedal left me more tired than I've been in weeks.

I sit back against the seat and squeeze my eyes shut.

I almost did it again. I almost lost someone I care about, because I was too scared. If Hestia hadn't pressured me into going to get them, I would have stayed and they would have died for sure in the bowels of that boat. When Hestia asked me if I would leave her behind I told her the truth, I would. I'm so fucking selfish.

And the fact that it was my honesty just makes me hate myself even more. I don't want to be responsible for people's lives anymore. I don't want anyone looking to me for protection. I can't offer that to anyone. I'm not built for it.

"Hey, you need your chair?" Winnie asks, his face swiped with blood and his eyes darting around. His adrenaline must still be surging.

"Yeah, it's over there." Right where Hestia and I had left it. He rushes over and pushes the chair over to me. I hop out of the van, but the second my feet touch the ground my knees give out and I crumble into the chair.

"Fuck, I got you." Winnie grabs hold of me under my arms like I'm a baby and heaves me into the chair. He's only helping me, but I want to punch him in the face. I know I'm not going to be able to pick myself off the floor if he drops me. I have to depend on him.

When he gets me settled I try to push myself, but I'm not able.

"You want to go into the clubhouse?" he asks and I give him a tight nod. I feel like I have just taken five hundred steps backward. Earlier I was able to push myself across the entire property now I need him to push me twenty feet.

"What the fuck happened, Smith!" I get inside to see Wyatt going off on Special Agent Smith.

"Look, Wyatt, the information was bad. That's all I can say."

"The information was bad? You asked me to go in there and pick up three men, not a fucking gang of assholes. If I don't have the right fucking information the entire club is at risk. That might not mean shit to you, but these men are my fucking brothers. Why the fuck would
